Return to Paradise - A Song for Canada

There has been just as much conflict within a country as there has been between countries. Every people battle’s with corrupt politicians and government institutes within their nation, this has been the case since the fall of man. But, from the last three years, I think we can all agree, that we have never seen such global corruption. An intentional catalyst to cause nation to go against nation, people to go against people. We divide ourselves into smaller and smaller groups so there is no unity. We no longer see each other as individuals but as groups. This dehumanizes ourselves and each other, so rather than two people having a discussion, it’s one faction versus the other. All we see are agendas, but the only agenda I care about is the one every human holds: to be able to provide for our families. Right now, people are being punished for simply wanting to provide for their families. This has made me hateful, but when I saw Roman Baber presenting a speech as to when he fell in love with this country, a young immigrant coming to Canada decades ago, it reminded me of my life, and all the memories I had pushed aside to justify my anger. We have been conditioned to hate each other. “Return to Paradise” is a prayer, a prayer that I hope will return us to the Canada that was full of opportunity and freedom. The freedom to live, the freedom to move, the freedom to work, the freedom to build, and the freedom to buy and sell. This prayer is not just for me, it goes out to so many more countries in this same position; to America, Australia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and so many other people losing their freedom to live in many more countries around the world. We have to remind each other why we love our countries, and why we love our neighbours. This love is something that we have held before, we can get it back. But it’s up to you. Don’t wait until the news tells you to love your neighbour, because they won’t. Governments feed off of division, but you don’t have to let them win. Use the greatest power of all, love. Love is how we will get our freedom back. Once I was able to fall in love with my country again, I remembered the love our people once had, we can get that back. We need only to remember the paradise we had.

“Return to Paradise” was inspired by the song Khuda Se Mannat Hai Meri, sung by an old man in the movie Keerthi Chakra. As he rides down a river, he sings out to his beloved country Kashmir, which was lost to war. I translated the song into English and worked from there. I am not a professional singer, but I am passionate about my country and its people. I hope that it can speak to many people around the world, just as Khuda Se Mannat Hai Meri did. Most importantly, I hope it reminds people of the beacon Canada once was for many people. It’s easier to hate something than to mourn it, and even more, it’s hard to fight for something with love in your heart instead of hate, but it’s what we must do to reclaim our nation. Love is a powerful thing, and Lord willing, we can all live together again in paradise.

I love my country, I love my people, and I love God, I hope that you too can share in this.

John 14: 27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.
