It’s important that parents are aware of, and understand the implications of, The Mature Minor Doctrine, also known as the Infants Act. These policies were introduced by all provincial governments in Canada to enable children under the legal age of consent (18 years) to access birth control, and later abortion services, without the knowledge or consent of their parents.
The scope of this doctrine has been expanded in recent years to enable minor children to receive vaccinations and other life-altering treatments, including gender-altering counselling, puberty blocking hormones, and surgery, without the knowledge or consent of their parents.
Discussion is currently underway in our federal parliament to include medically assisted dying (MAID) as a medical decision that mature minors can choose.
